Coach Mike Smith graduated in 1987 from Juniata Valley High School where he was part of back-to-back District 6 Championships. Coach Smith continued his education at Penn State, obtaining his bachelor's degree in Landscape Contracting and a secondary education degree in Science and Agriculture. Coach Smith played football for Penn State for 3 seasons. He played 2 years at the "Hero" position before switching to Free Safety his final year.

Coach Smith was assistant coach at Juniata Valley from 1997-2002. He then became head coach at his alma mater from 2002-2012. He led the Green Hornets to 4 ICC Divisional Championships and coached the Green Hornets in 2 Class 1A District 6 Championships. The 2004 Green Hornets are still the only regular season undefeated team in school history. In total, Coach Smith built a career record of 70-33. He enjoyed coaching football, track and basketball while at Juniata Valley.

Coach Smith passed away February 28 of this year leaving a strong sense of community and family as his legacy. In addition to his wife Anita Moyer Smith, he is survived by five children, his pride and joy: Michaela Knepp and her husband, John-Michael; Jared Smith; Halee Smith; Olivia Smith; and Charlee Smith.
